Great stylized Nyamwezi figure from Tanzania. Nyamwezi carvers ar famous for their figures which are usually carved out from a dark, heavy wood with a shiny surface. They tend to have elongated features with the statue`s face divided into two planes and the eyes inset with circular blue beads.
The name Nyamwezi means “people from the moon” in Swahili. It is usually taken to be a reference to their homeland in northwest central Tanzania, given to them by the people from the coastal regions of the country.
The Nyamwezi figure is in good condition with traces of tribal use. Large sculpture, total length: 63 cm.
