These unusual objects were made from gourds to hold a set of coins, usually from British West Africa, to make an object of tradeable value and prestige.
This piece is of made of a gourd, with coins tied on with leather straps. The coins, which are tenth-penny coins from British West Africa, date (those that are not worn too smooth to read) from the 30’s & 40’s. Overall good condition with traces of wear and tear.
Provenance: former Belgian private collection.
