Powerfull shrine figure from the IGBO people of NIGERIA.
Shrine figures represent gods who provide protection, healing and good fortune in return for respect, sacrificial food and adherence to their rules. Their hands are extended to receive gifts, and open to indicate generosity and honesty. The wooden figure has an stylistic coiffure and beautiful carvings all over the body.
Beautiful dark colorful aged patina. Condition good with traces of tribal use. The figure stands unstable on it`s own.
Provenance: former private collection from Belgium. Collected in the period 1953 – 1959 (More details provided to buyer).
