About this object

Beautiful Eket shield from Nigeria. Polychrome typical aspects with a central round-shaped face surrounded by motifs with triangles. The Eket worship the sun and the moon. The round faces liked masks are very characteristic of the ethnic group. This traditional Eket shield was not used as a defensive weapon, but as a decorative and ritual dance shield and has a lot of symbolic meaning. The shield is carved from wood and has a fine relief with polychrome hues. The Eket face is recognizable by their decorative patterns and repetition of forms. The lack of detail contributes to the power of the mask. The shield is in good condition with traces of wear and tear.
