Songye Kifwebe Helmet Mask – Wood with Raffia – DR Congo This impressive Kifwebe helmet mask from the Songye people of DR Congo embodies the powerful visual language of the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society. Kifwebe masks are instantly recognizable for their dense linear striations, carved in rhythmic grooves across the entire face. These horizontal lines—sometimes interpreted as evoking crocodile skin, bird feathers, or zebra markings—are a defining hallmark of Songye aesthetics . The mask shows the classic coffee‑bean‑shaped eyes, a feature frequently seen in both male and female Kifwebe masks.
