WHERE IT BEGAN

From travelling the world to the first collection of more than 1,000 objects.

The story of Asian African Art began with a growing interest in cultures, collecting and objects with a history.

A leap into the unknown

After completing his studies in 2013, Huub spent two years travelling the world. He worked on a resort on Moreton Island in Australia and later travelled through several countries in Southeast Asia. During those years, his interest in different cultures and communities continued to grow.

Back in the Netherlands, Huub started working in a warehouse. In the evenings, he began selling second hand items online, inspired by his father, who had been buying and selling objects at flea markets for many years.

That changed when Huub came across a collection of more than 1,000 pieces of African and Asian art. After visiting former art dealer Arnaud Hambresin in Ostend, Belgium, he decided to acquire the complete collection.

One condition was particularly important to him: the available information about the tribe and country of origin of each object had to be documented as carefully as possible.

That purchase became the foundation of Asian African Art in 2015. Before long, combining the growing business with a full time job was no longer possible, and Huub began focusing increasingly on Asian and African art.

What started with one collection of more than 1,000 objects became the foundation of Asian African Art.
MORE THAN A DECADE OF EXPERIENCE

A story told through collections, places and people.

From the first major acquisition in 2015 to international collections and visits across Europe and Asia, Asian African Art has continued to grow through real experience in the field.

2015

The first collection

Asian African Art begins with the acquisition of more than 1,000 pieces of African and Asian art from former art dealer Arnaud Hambresin in Ostend, Belgium.

2018

Important collections

The collection continues to grow through acquisitions from established collectors, including former gallery owner Justin Barthels and collector Antoon Key from Ghent.

2023

International network

Huub continues to expand his international network through fairs and acquisitions, including the Singapore Coin Fair and collections from gallery owner Manfred Schäfer in Germany.

2025

The Franco Rimoldi collection

Asian African Art acquires the complete Asian and African art collection of Franco Rimoldi, divided between locations in Darmstadt, Germany and Busto Arsizio, Italy.

IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS

Collections with a documented history.

Over the years, Asian African Art has acquired important collections from experienced collectors and former gallery owners. These acquisitions have played an important role in the development of the gallery and the knowledge behind its collection.

ANTOON KEY · GHENT, BELGIUM

The Antoon Key collection

As Asian African Art continued to grow, Huub was able to acquire collections from established collectors and former gallery owners. One of these was the collection of Antoon Key from Ghent, Belgium.

The acquisition became part of a growing network of collectors and collections that helped Asian African Art develop from its first major purchase into an internationally active gallery.

In November 2018, Huub documented the Antoon Key collection with photographs and video. That original footage is still available today and offers a direct look at one of the collections that formed part of the gallery’s early development.

INTERNATIONAL AUCTION HOUSES

Objects from our collections at Sotheby’s and Zemanek Münster.

Over the years, objects from collections acquired by Asian African Art have been offered through internationally recognised auction houses. These external references help document the provenance, quality and history connected to individual pieces.

PERSONALLY SOURCED COLLECTIONS

Building the collection through personal visits and acquisitions.

An important part of Huub’s work takes place outside the gallery. Larger collections are visited personally, giving him the opportunity to see the objects, learn more about their background and speak directly with the people behind the collection.

ULM · GERMANY · 2023

Collections from Manfred Schäfer

In July 2023, Huub visited gallery owner Manfred Schäfer in Germany. Over time, Asian African Art has been able to acquire several large collections from Schäfer.

These collections included pieces accompanied by documentation from Karl Ferdinand Schädler, the well known German ethnologist, collector and author.

DARMSTADT · GERMANY · 2025

The Franco Rimoldi collection

In 2025, Asian African Art had the opportunity to acquire the complete Asian and African art collection of Franco Rimoldi.

The collection was spread across two locations. The first part was located in Darmstadt, Germany, where Huub personally visited the collection before its acquisition.

BUSTO ARSIZIO · ITALY · 2025

Completing the acquisition

The second part of the Franco Rimoldi collection was located in Busto Arsizio, Italy.

Huub visited this location in November 2025. Together, the acquisitions in Germany and Italy brought the complete Rimoldi collection to Asian African Art.

Several pieces from this collection were subsequently sold through Zemanek Münster, an auction house specialised in fine old tribal art.

AN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

Knowledge and contacts beyond Asian and African art

Huub’s collecting interests also extend to gold and silver coins, an interest he inherited from his father, who has traded coins since his teenage years.

Over the years, Huub has visited international coin fairs in cities including Berlin, Munich, Singapore, Hong Kong, Verona and Tokyo. These visits have helped build an international network of collectors, dealers and specialists.
