This Mbole figure from the Boyowa / Mbole people of the Democratic Republic of Congo shows the classic traits associated with their powerful sculptural tradition. Mbole figures (lilwa) are closely linked to the Lilwa society, where they served as moral symbols and reminders of social laws. The figure displays the hands placed on the knees, a posture documented across Mbole sculptures and associated with submission, judgment, or ritual stillness. The heart‑shaped face covered with white kaolin is another defining feature: kaolin represents purity, ancestral presence, and the spiritual authority of the Lilwa society. These figures were traditionally used in ceremonies related to justice, social order, and remembrance of individuals who violated community rules. Provenance: former private German collection.
