Stylistic wooden Urhobo figure from Nigeria. The authentic figure is carying a baby in here hands. Great color silhouette with white and orange clay (phembe). Typical enlarged head. On top of the head there is a mask carved in the wood.
The Urhubo people settled north of the Niger river delta and live from fishing and farming.
They carve EDJO figures and ancestor statues – the former is respresented as mythic warrior holding weapons or magical containers. These ancestor figures are usually kept together in communal house where they preside over meetings.
