This is a beautiful old supply/offerings box, the middle part is made out of bark. The upper part consists in a lid with a finely carved male figure. It has a beautiful patina, with traces of tribal use. Especially the ancestor figures has a nice dark oily aged patina.
Unlike other known ethnic groups, the Mangbetu did not use special containers as reliquaries for their ancestral bones.
These boxes, objects of great prestige, were reserved for the great notables noble. They were used to preserve precious objects or as the present one, magic remedies or drugs, used by the great diviners or healers.
