The Bijogo inhabit the Bijagos archipelago off the coast of Guinea Bissau.
They are farmers and fishermen mostly. The masquerades that Nois days combine representations of fish, hammerhead shark, Shark saw but also Aries.
The most famous mask is that of the wild bull.
The Danceman evolves on four legs, scratching the earth like a bull.
This black polychrome mask expresses the great power conferred on the savage Bull by the sculptor artist. It reminds of the bust of the minotaur of Greek mythology.
