Crocodile Mask – Wood – Bobo – Burkina Faso

This large and striking crocodile mask from the Bobo people of Burkina Faso is a powerful example of their zoomorphic masquerade tradition. Measuring an impressive 90 cm, the mask has a commanding presence, enhanced by its wide open jaw, which gives the crocodile a dynamic and expressive appearance. The surface is decorated with the typical square and checkerboard patterns, a hallmark of Bobo and Bwa mask design. These geometric motifs carry symbolic meaning and create a bold visual rhythm across the elongated body of the crocodile. The mask is completed with full raffia, adding volume, movement, and ceremonial energy during performance.
