Authentic wooden double face mask from the Baule tribe in Ivory Coast. Beautifully aged patina with warm colors.
The Baule masks are characterized by a rounded face with realistic features, pointed chin, T-shaped nose, semi-circular eyes, raised scarification and an elaborate coiffure. They do not appear to have any sacred function and are worn only during festivities related to visits by important dignitaries. This type of mask sometimes has two faces, side by side, symbolizing twins, which for Africans is a good omen.
