Beautiful bronze equestrian figure from the Dogon tribe of Mali. Equestrian figures express status, prestige, and power. They bring honor to the ancestors. Although rare, horsemen as an icon have existed for 1000 years. Horsemen could be a supreme officeholder (Hogon), emissary from a distant land, or a warrior. The figure comes with a black wooden stand.
Provenance: Manfred Schäfer, former gallery owner from Ulm, Germany.
