Powerful funerary figure from the Ngata people of DR Cogno. Except a few rare little figurines and some wooden knives, the NGATA statuary is related to complex funerary rituals depending on the age and the “occupation” of the deceased. The most famous sculptures are large and rare anthropomorphic wooden polychrome figurines, also called “coffins” of “reliquary guardians”.
The item presented here is of a small size (intended for children) with an expression which is both penetrating and motionless. Both the colors and the geometrical designs refer to the traditional symbolic of the numerous African communities.
