Beautiful stylistic Chokwe mask from the Zambia not far from the border area with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The term askishi designates among the Chokwe, Luchazi, Luvale, Lunda and related ethnic groups, generally masks it.
This akishi represents a sociable character: Kalulu, who intervenes in the initiation and circumcision rites included in the Mukanda.
The face is simple and typical, of superb quality and very well preserved. The braided headdress was accompanied by a full costume based on the same two-tone patterns.
The most popular and best-known entertainment masks are Chihongo, spirit of wealth, and pwo, his consort. Chihongo was formerly worn only by a chief or by one of his sons as they traveled through their realm exacting tribute in exchange for the protection that the spirit masks gave.

The face mask is beautifully covered with red and brown kaoliën.
Good condition with a nice aged patina.
