About this object

This Lele wooden mask from the Kuba cultural sphere in the Democratic Republic of Congo shows the refined sculptural and decorative traditions for which Lele artists are known. Lele masks are rare compared to those of their Kuba neighbours, a point emphasized by museum sources such as the National Museum of African Art and the Brooklyn Museum . A defining feature of many Lele masks is the fraai haardracht (beautiful coiffure), often constructed from plant fibre, textile, or raffia, and richly decorated with cowrie shells or beads. Several documented examples show a beaded band or shell‑covered crest positioned in front of the coiffure, enhancing the mask’s ceremonial presence and visual richness. The face typically displays geometric volumes, almond‑shaped or slit eyes, and a strongly modeled nose, with pigments or natural patina accentuating the carved planes. Lele masks were historically connected to ceremonial performances, including harvest rites and funerals of important individuals. Their rarity outside Africa and their distinctive Kuba‑related aesthetics make them highly valued in collections. Provenance: former private German collection.
