Mask – Stone / Shell – Luba – DR Congo

Luba masks are rare and are primarily found in the eastern Luba kingdoms. dome masks are very similar to the Kifwebe mask used by the Songye, although they display more rounded features. [Jean-Baptiste Bacquart, The Tribal Arts of Africa, p.156] Good condition with the entire face covered in patterns of geometric grooves that are uniquely characteristic of these masks. Please note the nerves of the mask on the backside. Provenance: former private collection from Germany.
