A stylistic wooden gorilla mask from the KWELE / BAKWELE people of Gabon
Good condition with beautiful aged patina spread with kaolien.
This type of mask is used by the beete cult, to honour the male gorilla, considered in primitive mythology, to be the clan’s founding father, a mythical ancestor, and Lord of the Earth. In the beete cult of the Kwele people, the gon mask embodies the primordial wild and untamed nature.
