Powerful Matomba figure from the Teke tribe of DR Congo. The figures carved by Teke are characterized by slightly bent legs, a columnar torso framed by arms bent a right angles and an enlarged head with typical linear facial scarification’s and a trapezoidal beard. Their height varies from between 15 and 80 cm and these figures can be used either for an individual or for the entire community.
The shape of the magical substances attached to the statue`s body often indicates it`s function. Matomba figures carry a barrel-shaped Bilongo and have apotropaic functions. The bilongo is made from fabric and plant fibres and contains clear traces of libations.
Good condition with traces of tribal use. The figure stand a bit unstable on it`s own.
