Stylistic Luba monkey mask from DR Congo.
Material: wood and pigments.

These masks were used for entertainment, to illustrate folk tales and proverbs. They also had a serious function however, and were used during initiation to impart moral lessons through enacted tales.

Provenance: former private collection from Belgium.
