The function of Bembe art is said to be primarily concerned with contacting ancestors and seeking their assistance, which accords in general terms with other accounts testifying to use of figures to endow hunters and warriors with good fortune before combat or hunting expeditions.
Powerful ancestor figure from the Babembe people of DR Congo. Great realistic figure with good patina of age. The left foot of the figure is restored in the past.
