This traditional Dan shield was not only used as a defensive weapon, but also used as decorative and ritual mask and has a lot of symbolic meaning. The shield is carved from wood and has a fine relief with polychrome hues.
The Dan style is quite evident, with slit eyes and pursed lips.
Beautifully covered with dark brown, red and green pigments and patterns.
Fair condition with traces of tribal use. There is a crack in the shield. Good patina of age.
Provenance: former private collection from Belgium.
