About this object

This finely carved wooden stool from the Tabwa people of DR Congo is supported by two ancestor faces, each carrying the seat on their heads in classic caryatid fashion. The faces show the recognisable Tabwa features, including the characteristic tattoo‑like scarification patterns, carved in clean, linear motifs across the cheeks and forehead — a hallmark of Tabwa aesthetics . The figures are rendered with strong proportions and confident carving, reflecting the Tabwa tradition of honouring ancestors (mipasi) through sculptural representation. Their upright posture and expressive faces give the stool both structural strength and symbolic presence. The seat itself is smoothly shaped, while the supporting figures display detailed ornamentation, especially on the faces and backs, where geometric motifs echo the broader Tabwa visual language. The dark, aged wood surface aligns with documented Tabwa figural works, many of which show a similar patina and refined detailing . A culturally rich and visually compelling Tabwa ancestor‑supported stool — blending functional design with ancestral symbolism and classic Tabwa artistry. Provenance: Franco Rimoldi, Darmstadt (Germany).
