About this object

This terracotta head figure from Koma Land, in northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso, reflects the region’s ancient and highly distinctive sculptural tradition. Modelled by hand from coarse, iron‑rich clay, the piece shows the characteristic rounded head form, expressive facial features, and textured surface typical of Koma terracotta art. At 12 cm in height, it is a compact yet powerful example of the archaeological style associated with Koma culture. The softened contours, mineral deposits, and surface wear point to age and traditional firing methods, giving the figure an authentic archaeological presence. Small terracotta heads like this are often linked to healing rituals, shrine contexts, and ancestral symbolism, forming part of a broader corpus of figurative objects found across Koma Land sites. A refined and evocative terracotta head figure — ideal for collectors of early West African terracotta and ethnographic sculpture. Provenance: Manfred Schäfer collection, ex- gallery owner from Ulm, Germany. Including professional custom made stand.
