About this object

Igbo Terracotta Pot with Human Face – Nigeria This expressive terracotta pot from the Igbo people of Nigeria belongs to the well‑known tradition of anthropomorphic vessels, in which functional containers are shaped as stylised human heads. In this example, the open mouth forms the actual opening of the pot, a feature documented in Igbo‑Izzi anthropomorphic vessels where a large circular mouth serves as the access point to the interior . The pot shows the typical Igbo sculptural approach: simplified facial features, a rounded head‑form, and hand‑built clay construction. Such vessels were traditionally associated with ritual use, often linked to offerings or ceremonial contexts, as suggested by traces found in comparable examples . With its human face, wide mouth opening, and warm terracotta surface, this piece represents the distinctive artistic vocabulary of the Igbo terracotta tradition — a blend of utility, symbolism, and sculptural presence. A compelling and collectible object for admirers of African ceramic art. Provenance: Manfred Schäfer collection, ex- gallery owner from Ulm, Germany.
