About this object

Beautiful triple faces mask of the Lengola tribe of DR Congo. This impressive triple‑face mask from the Lengola people of DR Congo is closely associated with Bwami initiation traditions, where masks played a role in teaching moral codes, social order, and spiritual knowledge. Carved from wood, the mask presents three distinct faces, each aligned vertically to create a powerful, multi‑layered presence. The composition enhances its mysterious character: the faces are simplified yet expressive, with elongated forms and strong linear contours typical of Lengola aesthetics. The repetition of facial elements symbolizes layered identity, ancestral guidance, and the progression through different levels of initiation. Used in Bwami ceremonies, such masks embodied authority, wisdom, and transformation. Their striking geometry and ritual significance make them highly sought after in Central African art collections. A bold and evocative Lengola initiation mask — rich in symbolism, sculptural strength, and cultural depth. Provenance: former private collection from Germany.
