Bull Mask – Wood – Tabwa – Congo

This impressive wooden bull mask from the Tabwa people of DR Congo belongs to the powerful Kiyunde buffalo/bull mask tradition, known for its dramatic sculptural presence. With a total width of 79 cm, the mask is dominated by large, sweeping horns, a defining feature also seen in documented Tabwa buffalo masks . Carved from wood, the mask shows the typical elongated facial structure, strong nose bridge, and deep eye sockets associated with Tabwa zoomorphic helmet masks. Many known examples feature bold, simplified forms that emphasize strength and authority, reflecting the symbolic role of the buffalo or bull in Tabwa culture . The wide horns create a striking silhouette, enhancing the mask’s ceremonial impact during performances.
