Description

Wonderfull unique water vessel from the Nupe people of Nigeria.

Handcrafted by the Nupe people of Nigeria, these functional pots, always decorated with bands of carefully incised geometric designs and surface patterns, were stacked in rows on partially buried terracotta vessel supports inside Nupe houses. The base is rounded as these pots were carried on the head using cloth rings for support. A woven raffia ring to support the pot is included.

The Nupe are an ethnic group native to the middle belt of Nigeria. Living along the banks of the Niger river, the Nupe are now Muslims but the indigenous religion is still practiced by some and traditional rituals performed. Nupe craftsmen are renowned for their fine leather, mat and brass work.

Nupe art can be found in major museums and galleries. Most popular examples would be their stools, beds, portal doors and intricately decorated pots. Nupe art is mostly abstract but animal figures carved in relief can be found on some examples of their doors and pots.

Good condition with a wonderful aged patina. Heavy piece, 15 kg!
