About this object

This Lwalwa mask from the Democratic Republic of Congo is a classic example of the highly stylized, geometric sculptural tradition of the Lwalwa people. Lwalwa masks are immediately recognizable for their strongly abstracted facial planes, dominated by a long, sharply protruding nose—the feature that defines nearly all Lwalwa mask types. This characteristic is well documented across multiple sources, which describe the nose as massive, wedge‑like, and extending upward toward the forehead . The face is carved with clean, angular lines, giving it a cubist quality often associated with Lwalwa art. The rectangular or slit‑shaped eyes, set beneath a deeply modeled brow, reinforce the mask’s powerful graphic presence. Many Lwalwa masks, including the nkaki, mvondo, and mfondo types, share this same emphasis on a prominent triangular nose, a projecting mouth, and a balanced, geometric composition . Carved from wood, the mask typically shows a dark patina and traces of age or ritual handling. The mask has as efined abstraction, where minimal forms create maximum expressive impact.
